Keyboards when using e-mail

Posted by Vicki at February 24. 2008
User-testers remarked that if a bunch of e-mails were going to be sent, attention needs to be paid to the type of keyboard that is on the device. Different wireless devices have different layouts - some even have more than one. Options include a full QWERTY keyboard, a two-letter per button QWERTY keyboard (e.g., BlackBerry Pearl), and a multi-tap keyboard. Which type of keyboard do you prefer for e-mailing and why?

Testing the Nokia 6126 I found that if you need to email a lot, nothing replaces a full QWERTY keyboard. Pressing keys 3 or 4 times gets tiring mentally and physically!

So far, the Wireless RERC's Survey of User Needs (SUN) has received about a dozen comments from wireless customers with disabilities about the importance of QWERTY keyboards.

I have to say T-Mobile Sidekicks have the best full QWERTY keyboards. However for the email feature and other features, they're lacking a spell-checking application. It should be common sense for all smart phones to have a spell checking application built in.

I use a BlackBerry and like the QWERTY keyboard, however, I find the "Cap" button annoying to use because of it's placement on the bottom right corner.  It's counter-intuitive.  It should be placed below the "Alt" button on the left...my humble opinion...
