Growth of text-based wireless communications and new service offerings

Posted by jmorris at April 18. 2008

There is growing evidence that people are using their mobile devices more and more for text-based communications (email, instant messaging, text messasging, and internet access). And, wireless service providers seem to be responding.

Just this week Verizon Wireless introduced a set of new data-only service plans (limited voice communications are optional). The company was reported to be aiming these new service plans at people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Yet, the same news article (here's the link: http://telephonyonline.com/wireless/news/verizon-att-pricing-0415/), indicated that Verizon Wireless had bigger plans for introducing more such plans aimed at the general public.

What's your view? Would you want a data-only wireless service plan? Or, would you prefer to have a full voice-data plan? Do you find yourself using just the data component of your service?
