New GPS navigation services

Posted by jmorris at April 17. 2008

The Boston Globe published an article today (April 17, 2008) on some emerging GPS services for cell phones. These include turn-by-turn driving directions that also provide the locations and phone numbers of the nearest bank, hotel and other businesses.

There is also a service that can guide you to businesses that offer AAA subscriber discounts. This service also lets you instantly call for AAA roadside assistance if your car breaks down.

Yet, another service identifies Wi-Fi hotspots and tells you which ones are free of charge. This same service also identifies the level of traffic congestion on possible travel routes.

The story also mentions a service that allows you to download mini-programs that do one simple thing. One of those lets you identify the nearest available ZipCar (those cars that are parked all around urban areas that you can rent by the hour). Another widget, provided by StubHub, lists all the local entertainment events and tells you how to get tickets.

What kind of services would you want on a GPS cellphone?
