Accessible Apps: Sit or Squat Review
Up to GPS, Navigation
Sitorsquat version 2.3 is an updated application on iTunes (can be used on iPhone/iPod Touch or Blackberry) that informs users on where the closest public restrooms are located. Other information can be added to the network by registered users for all to share. Information on handicapped accessibility can also be recorded in the notes section which includes measurements and presence of installed equipment such as hand bars. Should you have a device with a built in camera, you can take a snapshot of the facility to share with other users.
This application has a great deal of promise for the disabled population looking for accessible pit-stops. I use the word “promise” because the application does not yet take advantage of its inherent capability to document the accessibility of public restrooms. For instance, there is a field to describe other aspects of each restroom but very few of the reviews include information of accessibility and few take photos.
Furthermore, other fields are searchable for things like if the establishment is currently open, changing tables, and relative cleanliness (sit or squat). What would be useful for people concerned with physical accessibility would be a searchable field dedicated to disabled access such as measurements between toilet and door/sink, stairs leading to restroom, width of the lavatory entrance and toilet door, other obstructions leading to the restroom, and the inclusion of grab bars.
I would like to see the developers create this dedicated and (searchable) field on accessibility. Additionally, I would like to see users of this application begin documenting accessibility by using the description field and taking photos. I had the chance to see for my self if a couple of these reviews were helpful for a person with accessibility needs. I used the SitorSquat location finder and found two Atlanta businesses on Peachtree Road, Kroger grocery store and Central City Tavern Pub. The Kroger description mentioned the restrooms were handicapped accessible and upon further review I found this was correct. Further elaboration of accessible amenities such as wide enough stalls and grab bars would be helpful in future postings. I found the Central City Tavern review to be basic with no information on accessibility so I decided to check it out and post my own review on SitorSquat. I found the restroom entrance in this pub to be too narrow and thus non-accessible for wheelchair users. I personally will commit myself to begin posting reviews of restroom accessibility on SitorSquat and I hope others will contribute as well.
