"Huge" keys on the BlackBerry Flip

Posted by brlippin at October 30. 2008

Hi everyone,

David Pogue of the New York Times just wrote a review of two new BlackBerry models, the Flip and the Bold.  For those that are unfamiliar with a BlackBerry, it is a wireless device whose main specialty is email.  It also does all the usual wireless things like making phone calls, surfing the internet, downloading music, and coming in March, will be able to download applications from BlackBerrys own "apps" store.

What caught my eye is his assertion that the keys on the new Flip are, "huge, so they're easy targets".  He does mention that each key carries two letters of the alphabet, with just some of those keys  carrying a number, laid out as on a regular phone keypad.  So, if all you need the device for is making telephone calls and you have difficulty punching small keys due to a mobility impairment in your hand or arm, or if you have low vision that makes it difficult for you to see small buttons, it might be worth your while to look at this device.

An added feature on both models is a backlit display which could help you locate the buttons if you have low vision.

What sorts of devices have you been using that have "large" buttons?

-Ben
