Review: HP TouchSmart Laptop more a miss than a hit

Posted by hawaii73 at April 21. 2009

I am always on the hunt for computing devices that can help people living with disabilities, especially those of us that, at one time or another, have limited finger dexterity or loss of fine motor skills.

I had heard a few things about the HP TouchSmart PC desktop that operates with a touch screen to open applications and shuttle through files. So I was intrigued to learn if the laptop version of this HP model line - the HP TouchSmart tx2-120us Laptop - had the same level of accessibility. The disappointing answer is no. The laptop version required much finer motor control than the desktop version.

I went to a national computer chain dealer to try it out only to find it lacking on many levels when it comes to disabled access.  I found that the text, even when magnified, is much too small to tap on to when trying to open applications or files.  Unlike the desktop version, I was unable to accurately touch my desired text/application with my knuckle (as many quadriplegics do with limited finger capabilities) and found it a difficult task, similar to difficulty experienced using a smaller handheld device.

The touch capabilities that worked so well on the Touchsmart desktop were nearly non-existent with the laptop version, particularly dragging and “flowing”  through applications, pictures, or documents.  It soon became obvious why the laptop version came with a detachable stylus.  This is the only effective way one can use this touch sensitive laptop.

One positive note on the HP TouchSmart laptop is that it converts to a tablet by spinning the screen 180 degrees and laying it flat upon the keyboard.  This may help some users that want to input data while cradling it in your arms. But unfortunately, fine motor skills are a must when using this laptop.
