Odiogo - Text to voice podcasts

Posted by jmorris at May 06. 2008

While searching the web for reaction to AT&T's new data-only Text Accessibility Plan (TAP), I stumbled onto a free service called Odiogo (pronounced "audio go") that converts web text into an audio podcast.

It is intended as a way for bloggers and other website owners to reach the 160 million people with iPods, while they are on the go. But, it seems like a great tool for those who wish to make their websites and blogs accessible to those with visual impairment.

The free service works only with sites that have RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds. It is compatible with all  blog engines that publish RSS feeds such as Typepad, Blogger, Wordpress and Overblog.

I found this service through the blog site Stone Deaf Pilots, http://www.stonedeafpilots.com/?p=39.

You can also go directly to the company's website and sign up for free at http://www.odiogo.com/

I have not used the service, except to play the Odiogo file of one of the blog postings on Stone Deaf Pilots. The sound and pronunciation were quite good.
