Hear better on your cell phone in a noisy room
Up to Voice Communications
Can't hear what the other person is saying when talking on your cell phone in a noisy place?
Here's a tip: cover the mouthpiece.
It seems like an odd solution when the problem seems to be the earpiece, not the mouthpiece. But, the mouthpiece picks up ambient noise and transmits it to the earpiece, which compounds the distracting noise you hear.
This recommendation has been circulating around the web lately. Wired.com provides good coverage and a bit more of the science behind it. Check it out at: http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Hear_Better_on_Your_Cellphone
I haven't tried it yet. If any one has, please let us know your experience.

I had several opportunities last week while in a noisy restaurant, but kept forgetting to try it. My expectation is exactly the same as yours - that it might help a little, but that the background noise coming directly into my other ear still would have been very distracting. But, certainly, every little bit helps, especially if you don't have the option of finding a quieter place to have a phone conversation.
