The Chicago Tribune's "Tech Buzz" column has a recent review of two devices that it identifies as "smart simple phones", smart because they provide very easy (simple) use for specific functions.

The first phone reviewed is the Pantech Breeze, which has received a lot of attention for its large numerical keys, bright display with large characters, and three speed-dial keys. This device, marketed primarily to seniors, focuses on voice communication, even though it has text capabilities.

The other device in the review is the Motorola Rokr E8, which emphasizes it's capabilities as a music player (and a phone). The reviewers gave good marks for the ease with which users can load and play music on this device. Great for younger users who need voice communication and tunes, according to the reviewer.

One intriguing feature of the Rokr is "Mode Shift", which changes the look of the keypad depending on which functionality (mode) one is using. Mode Shift essentially removes controls that are not needed at a given moment, thereby simplifying use.
