The magazine GPS World just published a news story about technology that Ford Motor Company is developing that uses a GPS system and wireless communication to reduce traffic and minimize the chances of accidents. The technology centers on the development of "smart intersections" that contain sensors, as welll as GPS and wireless communications technology.

Monitoring traffic and the rate of speed of approaching cars, the smart intersection can warn GPS equipped cars of the need to stop or slow down. Specially equipped vehicles developed in conjunction with the smart intersection provide audio and visual warnings of approaching hazards.

This technology could be especially useful to older drivers and those with some physicial limitation by increasing the time to react to road hazards.
