Study: Social networks are top destination of mobile browsers

Opera, the Norway based company that produces the Opera Mini mobile browser reported yesterday that social networking sites are the top destination for mobile browers. Sites such as MySpace and Facebook visited on mobile browsers more frequently than sites with news, maps, or weather.

Nevertheless, there are significant variations across geographical areas in the frequency with which mobile web users visit the various types of sites. Globally, approximatley 40 percent of mobile web traffic is directed toward social network sites, versus about 25 percent directed toward content portals or search engines. But, in the United Staes, South Africa and Indonesia about 60 percent of mobile web traffic is directed toward social networking portals.
